তথ্য ও যোগাযোগ প্রযুক্তি বা আইসিটি সাধারণভাবে তথ্য প্রযুক্তির সমার্থক শব্দ হিসেবে ব্যবহার হয়। তথ্য ও যোগাযোগ প্রযুক্তি এক ধরনের একীভূত যোগাযোগ ব্যবস্থা এবং টেলিযোগাযোগ, কম্পিউটার নেটওয়ার্ক ও তৎসম্পর্কিত এন্টারপ্রাইজ সফটওয়্যার, মিডলওয়্যার তথ্য সংরক্ষণ, অডিও-ভিডিও সিস্টেম ইত্যাদির সমন্বয়ে গঠিত এমন এক ধরনের ব্যবস্থা যার মাধ্যমে একজন ব্যবহারকারী খুব সহজে তথ্য গ্রহণ, সংরক্ষণ, ও বিশ্লেষণ করতে পারে। প্রযুক্তিত আইসিটি শব্দটির ব্যবহার শুরু করেন একাডেমিক গবেষকরা ১৯৮০ সালের দিকে। কিন্তু শব্দটি জনপ্রিয়তা লাভ করে ১৯৯৭ হতে। স্টিভেনসন ১৯৯৭ সালে যুক্তরাজ্যের সরকারকে দেওয়া ১ প্রতিবেদনে এই শব্দটি উল্লেখ করেন, যা পরবর্তীতে ২ হাজার সালে যুক্তরাজ্যে নতুন জাতীয় পাঠ্যপুস্তকে সংযোজন করা হয়েছিল।
বর্তমান সময়ে তথ্য ও যোগাযোগ প্রযুক্তি দ্বারা একক তার বা একক লিঙ্ক সিস্টেমের মাধ্যমে টেলিফোন, অডিও-ভিজুয়াল ও কম্পিউটার নেটওয়ার্কের সমন্বয় প্রযুক্তিকে প্রকাশ করা হয়। পূর্বে এই কাজগুলো শুধুমাত্র কম্পিউটার ব্যবহার করে করা হলেও বর্তমানে মোবাইল ও বিভিন্ন স্মার্ট ডিভাইস ব্যবহার করে আইসিটির কাজ করা হয়। একক লিঙ্ক সিস্টেমের মাধ্যমে টেলিফোন, অডিও-ভিজুয়াল ও কম্পিউটার নেটওয়ার্কের সমন্বয়ের ফলে বিশাল অঙ্কের অর্থনৈতিক খরচ কমে গিয়েছিল।

বর্তমান সময়ে বিশ্বব্যাপী আইসিটি তে খরচের মূল্য নির্ধারন করা হয়েছে ৩.৫ ট্রিলিয়ন US ডলার এবং প্রতি বছর তা ৫% হারে বৃদ্ধি পাচ্ছে। প্রতি ১৫ বছরে এই খরচের মূল্য দ্বিগুণ হচ্ছে।
আইসিটির বিভিন্ন ক্ষেত্রে মোট বাজেট ব্যবহারের শতাংশ নিম্নরূপঃ
- ৩১% - ব্যক্তিগত খরচ (আভ্যন্তরিন)।
- ২৯% - সফটওয়্যার খাতে খরচ (বাহ্যিক)।
- ২৬% - হার্ডওয়্যার খাতে খরচ (বাহ্যিক)।
- ১৪% - বাহ্যিক সেবা সরবরাহকারী (বাহ্যিক)।

Information and communication technology or ICT is commonly used as a synonym for information technology. Information and communication technology is an integrated communication system and telecommunication, computer network and related enterprise software, middleware data storage, audio-video system, etc., through which a user can easily receive, store, and analyze information. Academic researchers started using the term ICT in the 1980s. But the word gained popularity since 1997. Stevenson mentioned the term in a report to the UK government in to 1997, which was later included in the new national textbook in the UK in 2000.
Currently, information and communication technology refers to the combination of telephone, audio-visual and computer networks over single wire or single link systems. Earlier these tasks were done only using computers, but nowadays ICT works are done using mobiles and various smart devices. The integration of telephone, audio-visual and computer networks through a single link system has reduced huge economic costs.
